Hotels are wonderful places for photographers – wide, light spaces, often with plenty of natural light. This hotel is in Greenbelt, Maryland and gives us some examples of using composition rules to create architectural photos with impact.

Below are four composition tips for photographing architecture with a wide lens.

  1. Always remember the laws of distortion: level the lens accurately to avoid distorted vertical lines and remember to correct any barrel distortion created by the lens.
  2. Find a focal point and combine all composition theory to bring the eye to that point. Combine leading lines, rules of thirds, repetition and light to create flow through the image.
  3. Use color to create zones. Place the brightest part of the image on the intersections for rule of thirds.
  4. Fill the frame with shapes that contribute to the story. Here the high contrast ceiling and windows fill the image. Can you imagine if there was a lot of the seating area and the shapes were smaller?
